Make Up Work Monday

If you have ANY assignment(s) that you have not completed and turned in to me use this period to do it.  Turn it in on classroom and let me know that you did so that I can go check it.  Anything other than the typing assignment from Friday will be considered extremely late but will be considered.

Friday, October 28, 2016

Today you will practice typing again.  You will type Practice Prompt #1, which should be at your station.  Open up a Google Doc, insert a HEADER which is right aligned and includes your name, class period and date.  Then type the document just as it appears on the page. Capitalization and punctuation, and spelling will be graded.

Next you will insert a page break after the last sentence you typed (this will give you a second page) then copy and past the entire document onto a second page (not a new document).  If you inserted a header you will see you name and info in top right corner of page.  Here you will change the following formats:

Center the title and change the font to permanent marker 18 pt.
Change the type size back to 12 pt for the rest of the document.
Highlight the entire document and choose justify for the alignment.
Make this entrie document single spaced except for a double space after the title.
Start a second paragraph beginning with the sentence, These must be met....
Double space between the paragraphs.
Change the word hospitality to red everytime it appears in the document.
Underline the word Tourism every time it appears.
Create a third paragraph, beginning with the sentence, Technology has made...
double space between the second and third paragraphs.
Change the font of the first paragraph to roboto
Change the font of the second paragraph to Courier New
Change the font of the third paragraph to Georgia

Then in the upper left hand corner of your document, change the name to Practice Prompt 1 and turn it in to your google classroom.

Turn in your updated resume and reference page to the assignment in your Google Classroom. It is due today period.

When you have completed that assignment I want you to pick a partner for you next assignment.  No more than 2 people.  You make work by yourself if you want to as well.  When you have pick your working partner let me know and I will give you your time period for the next project, which is historical technology research.

Each group will be given a 20 year time period to research.  You will find eight (8) different technological advances during this time period.  They can come from anywhere in the world not just the United States.  You will then create a 10 slide presentation of your findings.  Things to include in project:

10 slides minimum (Title slide, 8 advancement slides, and a citation page)
where was it invented?
who invented it?
how did it impact the world?
include pictures, etc
use at least 3 different sources
create a citation page using the proper/correct webpage citations from the notes that are still in your classroom.
Title slide should be creative, show your time period and have your names on it.

You will present these to the class next week.

Today you will edit and make changes to your resume draft.  I made suggestions on everyone's resumes that turned one in.  I want you to edit yours and fix some of the things that are suggested.  this will be your final draft and it will count as a test grade this time when we turn it in.  This one needs to be as neat as you can do one, check your formatting, spacing, alignment, and of course spelling.  Remember cities, states, street names, etc... are all capitalized.  Your resume should all fit on one page I would think.  Set your spacing for single spacing and this will help some of you.

We will add a second page.  This page will be your reference page.  I have been reminding you for 2 weeks to get 3 people that you think would be excellent references for you and get their address, phone, email....  This page is very simple you will set your spacing for single spacing and center the word References at the top of the page and then left align and put your three references like this:

References

Herman Munster
1313 Mockingbird Lane
Scarytown, TX 77777
555-555-5555
hmunster@biggreenhead.com

next one

next one

and that will be your reference page.  Don't do anything fance on this page, but it does need to match your resume style as far as font goes.  Use the same style on this page.

This will be due tomorrow!!!!!

Today you need to make sure that you have turned in ALL ASSIGNMENTS that are due.  If you have any assignment that you have not done, besides the resume draft (too late for that one), then get them finished and submitted on classroom.

If you have completed all assignment then I want you to complete lesson 17 on www.freetypinggame.net with the goal set at 30 wpm.  Then go back and do lessons 1-4 with your target goal set at 35 wpm.  Use the home keys and do not type with one or two fingers.  Try and get better at typing.

It is Friday, Life is Good, 8 weeks of school already gone.  Have a great weekend, make good decisons, and influence someone in a positive way.

Today you should be finishing up your three letters of inquiry.  Once you have completed the first letter you may open a new Doc and copy and paste your first letter into the second page.  You may then change the company name, address, and edit the content of your letter without having to completely retype the entire thing.  I will allow you to do this because this is something you wrote and note just copying and pasting from a webpage.  Make sure and check your formatting because much of your grade will be about formatting your letters according to the directions given to you on Monday.  There is an assignment posted in your Google Classroom where you will turn in all 3 letters.  Open the assignment and then add all 3 of your letters before turning it in.

Some of you guys/girls are not doing much this six weeks and my patience is wearing pretty thin with extending time for you to do these assignments.  So far you should have turned in a Draft copy resume, a job search table, and now the 3 letters of inquiry.  Zeroes will be given after Friday for any of those assignments not turned in.

You also need to have your 3 references I have been reminding you about each day.  Tomorrow I will hand your resumes back and we will begin editing them for the final draft and we will add a reference page to them with your three references.  You need to get their address (street, city, state) and phone or email if you can, and what is there Title.

Letters of Inquiry

Today you will begin researching and typing your letters of inquiry using the three (3) jobs you were to have researched last week.  You need to do a Google search for "letters of inquiry samples"  this will pull up mutltiple websites with examples of what a letter of inquiry is and actual samples for you to look at or to use.

Assignment

You are to construct three letters of inquiry addressed to the jobs that you looked up last week.  You will need an address for that job for sure.  If there is not contact person you may address the letter to "To whom it may concern:".  You are to use THREE different letters samples.  DO NOT use the same letter for all three jobs.

Formatting instructions: (Using Google Docs)
Make your font Times New Roman 12 pt.
Make the line spacing to single space and double space between paragraphs. (Format/Line spacing)
Double space between your address, date line, company address, and who letter is to.
Quadruple space between sincerely and your name.  (hit return 4 times after sincerely)
Name your letters Job 1, Job 2, Job 3.  (click on untitled document and change name)

You may have to embelish (fib) a bit on these letters to fill them out with your accomplishments but that will be ok.  Make sure these are saved in your drive when you complete them.  If you create a folder called Coach Adair and put them in there they will be easy to find.

If you have not finished and turned in your first draft of your resume you must complete that ASAP and turn it in on Google Classroom.

Today's assignment is to do some job research.  Using a job search engine, you are to research 3 jobs that you think you might interest you in the future.  It can be in whatever city you like or you can research jobs in different cities.  You can use any of the following job search engines:

www.monster.com
www.ziprecruiter.com
www.careerbuilder.com
www.indeed.com
www.simplyhired.com

These are websites you can use but there are others as well and they are structured different and give different information, but they are very simple to use.  DO NOT apply for one of the jobs just get the info required.

The information we are looking for in the job specifications are:
City, State
Job title
Company name
Address
Contact person - this info may or may not be available
Salary
Qualifications - degrees, certifications, or experience required.  We need to find entry level positions.

You are then going to create a google doc which will show this information in a table format. Here are the instructions:
- INSERT a Header that includes your name, class period and date and right align it.
- Title the document Job Search.  Bold and center this information and make it 18pt.
- Create a a 4x8 table in your Doc.
- The column headings should be Job Specs, Job #1, Job #2, Job #3.  These should be centered at the top of each column.
- Then fill in the information that you found out about the 3 jobs you searched for to complete your table.

Continue working on your resume today.  When you complete the draft go to your google classroom and turn it in under the assignment posted there.  When you have completed and turned it in you have a bit of free time to play some games or listen to music quietly.

Today you will start typing your resumes.  I have placed a packet with sample resumes at each desk that also include a Reference sheet.  You can use the format of one of these samples or you can look at some samples that Google Docs has or you can open Microsoft Word and type in Resume in the search bar and it will bring up many samples as well.  If you choose to use microsoft word for yours you will have to save the file to the computer or a flash drive and then upload the file into your drive.  To do that simply open your drive and right click in a blank space and choose upload file and go to where you saved it and select it to upload.

Remember you want your resume to have style but not for it to be cute.  Play around with fonts and sizes that you like and different style bullets.  Make your resume sharp.  Remember not to use the word "I".  You will probably want to edit some of your responses from your workbook to include those action verbs that are listed before step five (one liners).  Remember to include clubs, activites, etc... that you have been involved in, whether it is in school or out of school (such as 4H, church activites, etc...).

You will also need to think of 3 people that you could use as a reference for you.  We will create a reference page to attached to our resumes.  These references need to be people that would tell your future employer what a great person you are and that they should hire you.  Examples would be Teachers, someone you have worked for before, Principals, Preachers, etc.....not your parents or other kin.  You will need to be able to get there address, phone number, email address etc...
